VPN stands for virtual private network. When you connect to a VPN, you create a secure and
encrypted connection to the VPN server.
All of your online traffic is then transmitted through this encrypted tunnel, so any nosy neighbors along
the way won't be able to see what sites you visit or what you do online. In other words, they just see that
you're connected to a VPN.
They don't know which websites you visited, what videos you watched, or what files you downloaded.
You can also use a VPN to access region-locked content like BBC iPlayer from anywhere in the world (as
long as BBC offers an app on the platform you're using).
A VPN will help protect you against blanket government surveillance programs such as PRISM. If you
want to encrypt all of your internet activity and add an extra layer of security, choose a VPN service that
supports OpenVPN with 256-bit AES encryption.
